Who can apply to be on staff at Qwanoes?
People of all ages are welcome to apply! While most of our summer staff are typically young adults, college students, and high school students, we are also thankful for others of all ages who feel called to serve. Most positions require you to be 18 or older by December 31 of the year you serve, or to be a graduate of our CIT (Counselor-In-Training) Program. Some opportunities are also available for 15–16-year-olds through our Step-Out Program.
Do I need to have previous camp experience?
Not at all! Many of our staff serve at camp for the very first time. We provide training, mentoring, and support to help you succeed and thrive.
Do I need to be a Christian to apply?
Yes. Since our entire mission and program are centred on helping campers discover life in Jesus, we ask that all staff be followers of Christ who desire to grow in their relationship with God and point others to Him.
I'm feeling spiritually dry — should I still come?
Yes — if you desire to grow. We all go through seasons of dryness, and Qwanoes is a place where many have found renewed passion for their faith. Through real conversations, worship, and meaningful community, you’ll be encouraged to take the next step in your walk with Jesus. You don’t need to have it all together — just come open and willing.
When should I apply to work at Camp Qwanoes?
Most applications are processed from November to early April, and we recommend applying as early as possible. Applications received after June 1st may take longer to process. After you apply, we’ll contact you to arrange an interview (in person or by phone). Interviews are required for all staff.
If accepted, we’ll do our best to place you in your preferred role. However, we trust that each of our staff would be willing to serve in other areas to meet special needs that may arise occasionally.
You can apply as a New or Returning Staff Member, LIT, CIT, or Step-Out through our Online Staff Portal.
When should international staff apply?
International applicants should aim to apply in October for the following summer. This allows enough time to process the required work permits, which are essential to serve at camp. Please note that our staff positions are primarily seasonal, with most opportunities running just during the summer months.
🙋♂️ Serving on Staff
What kinds of positions are available?
We offer a wide range of roles — from cabin counselors and activity leaders to kitchen, media, office, and support crew positions. Whether you’re more upfront or behind-the-scenes, there’s a place for you. You can view all available positions here.
Can I choose the weeks I serve?
Yes! While we love having people serve all summer, we understand that everyone has different availability. When you apply, you’ll let us know what weeks you’re available, and we’ll do our best to find the right fit. Just a quick note — to qualify for a paid position, staff need to serve 9 or 10 full weeks.
Is training provided?
Absolutely. All summer staff attend Staff Training at the start of their time here, and there’s ongoing coaching and support throughout the summer. There are also pre-summer training opportunities available. See more by clicking here.
Will I be supported while I serve?
Yes — deeply. You’ll be surrounded by caring leaders and a staff community that’s committed to your well-being and growth. You’re never alone here.
What if I mess up or struggle?
We believe in grace and growth. If you make a mistake, we’ll walk with you in honesty, accountability, and care. Our goal is always restoration, not perfection.
Do you offer shorter-term opportunities?
Yes! While we love when staff can serve for the full summer, we also offer shorter-term options depending on availability and need. Let us know your schedule when you apply.
What’s the difference between a paid and volunteer staff position?
To qualify for a paid position, staff need to serve 9 or 10 full weeks, from Staff Training through Youth Camp. If you’re serving for fewer weeks, your position will be on a volunteer basis.
Can I help before or after summer?
Yes! Many positions begin during what we call Advance Crew, which starts a couple of months before summer officially kicks off. Staff whose roles begin during this time are paid as part of their regular employment. We also support — and often financially assist — staff who stay after summer to help with wrap-up and post-camp operations. You can indicate your availability for pre- or post-summer opportunities when you apply, and we’ll be in touch about ways you can serve!
⛺ Life at Camp
What’s a typical day like?
Camp days are full of energy, laughter, serving, and spiritual impact. You’ll help lead activities, care for campers, and be part of special events — with time built in for rest and spiritual encouragement too.
Is there time off?
Yes. You’ll receive scheduled time off each week, plus moments of rest built into the daily rhythm. We value your health and want to help you stay refreshed.
Is food and accommodation provided for staff?
Yes! All staff—both paid and volunteer—receive food and accommodation while serving at camp, including during time off between camps. We want to make sure you’re well cared for throughout your time with us.
What should I pack for the summer?
Here are the basics: bring clothing for all kinds of weather, a swimsuit, a Bible, toiletries, and any personal items you’ll need. Don’t forget to bring your own towels and bedding (sheets, pillow, sleeping bag or blanket).
What if I forget to pack something?
No problem! Camp is about 15–20 minutes from stores like Walmart and Superstore. If you forget something, you’ll have opportunities to pick it up. We also have a staff concierge who can help with small item pickups during the week, and a bus trip into Duncan at the end of each camp.
I’m not super outgoing — is that okay?
Totally. Qwanoes is made up of all kinds of people, and we need both the energetic up-front leaders and the steady behind-the-scenes team members.
🌎 International + Practical
Can I serve if I’m from outside Canada?
Yes! We love welcoming international staff. We’ll work with you to sort out any necessary travel or visa arrangements.
Can I get volunteer or internship credit for this?
Often yes — especially for high school or college volunteer hour requirements. Let us know what documentation you need and we’ll be happy to help.
Is there financial support available?
Yes — we offer financial support opportunities for summer staff. We can also help you raise funds through our optional Staff Support Program.
Will I be safe and cared for?
Yes. Camper and staff safety is our highest priority. Qwanoes is accredited by the BC Camping Association and operates with rigorous safety and support protocols.
Why is my staff account disabled or not working?
This is usually caused by trying to log into the Staff Portal using the wrong link—often the camper registration link instead of the staff login link. Be sure you’re using the Staff Portal login link sent to you or found on our website. If you’re still having trouble, reach out to us and we’ll help you get back in.
